The Information SocietyNorretranders, The User Illusion, 1998
"The computer has an enormous ability to handle information, which has enabled scientists to study complexity. But it also has the ability to present its user with very little information: In its user interface, it makes mainly use of the bandwidth of language (~16-40 bits/sec). Information society can seem stressful because it contains not too much information but too little… Sensory poverty is on its way to becoming a major problem in society, provoking a cry for meaning amidst the flow of information. Man moved down to a lower bandwidth, and he is getting bored."
